Set a boundary and let your child speak up
Your child’s feelings and the agreed rule can both be acknowledged
Your child wants to keep playing in the evening, even though it’s the agreed time to turn the game off. You can acknowledge that they’re in the middle of something that matters to them. Then remind them of the rule and offer a choice you can follow through on.
“I can see you wanted to finish the game. We agreed to stop at eight. Would you like to save it yourself or do it together?” Once you’ve both calmed down, listen to their suggestion for another day. For example, you could start playing earlier so there’s time to finish a game that’s already in progress.
Practice. Imagine a situation with an agreed time to leave. Acknowledge how they feel, remind them of the agreement, and offer one practical choice.
