Adjust Your Environment

Make the activity you want easier and unnecessary detours harder

Your environment can influence whether you remember a habit and whether it’s easy to follow through. If you want to pack lunch in the morning, put the container somewhere visible the night before. If you want to read instead of checking the news, put a book where you usually sit in the evening and leave your phone out of reach.

You don’t have to change your whole home or remove every distraction. Choose one obstacle you can change. It might be missing equipment, an unclear process, an inconvenient time, or too many steps before the activity itself.

A little preparation can help too: comfortable clothes ready for a walk, water by your desk, or an open calendar with one time set aside. These aids don’t replace a plan; they reduce the friction involved in following it.

Check that any changes to your environment don’t interfere with other people’s privacy or needs. Agree on changes to shared spaces, and don’t shift responsibilities onto your family without talking it through.
