Social skills aren’t a performance

Good connections respect both people

Social skill isn’t about being liked by everyone. It’s about noticing the situation, responding clearly, and taking your own needs and other people’s into account. Some people enjoy talking in a larger group; others prefer a quiet conversation one-to-one. Both are fine.

Before responding, ask yourself three questions: What’s happening? What do I want to achieve? What next step will leave room for the other person too? These questions can help you avoid mistaking silence for hostility or disagreement for a personal attack. But you don’t have to continue every conversation or pretend to be interested; you can ask for time or politely bring the topic to a close.
